Experience

Nicolás has been a partner of our firm since 2023 and currently leads the ESG practice. He served as Vice President of Legal and Vice President of Development for BHP Minerals Americas between 2015 and 2023. Previously, he was General Counsel and Compliance Officer at LarraínVial. Throughout his professional career as in-house, he has led teams in different countries, the most relevant being Chile, Australia, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru and Colombia. His experience includes responsibility for the legal and regulatory affairs of Chilean and multinational companies in different areas of law, such as corporate, commercial, contractual, environmental, administrative, project and labor law. In addition, Nicolás has extensive experience in services that normally fall outside the traditional offerings of law firms, (legal management & legal operations), crisis management, external communications, governmental affairs, ESG and risk management.

At the beginning of his career, Nicolás worked as a foreign associate at the US firm Greenberg Traurig (Miami) and was Assistant General Counsel of GrupoNueva and General Counsel of Masisa Brazil (based in Curitiba).

Given his experience as a legal manager and corporate executive, his practice area focuses mainly on strategic business advice in different areas of law. He is currently legal advisor to several domestic and foreign clients and companies operating in different countries and industries throughout Latin America.

Awards and Honors

  • Nicolás has been recognized on several opportunities as one of the most influential Legal Managers in Chile. In 2019, the BHP Minerals Americas legal team, led by him, won the Latin American Legal Team of the Year Award (granted by the Latin American Corporate Counsel Association (LACCA)).
